Pre-Holidays Update: 11-19-10

Hello Hello...

Time to break the radio silence. We've been a busy band of late....

1) Writing and pre-production for 'Rabbit Hole' is pretty much wrapped up and we plan to begin the drum recording sessions the week after Thanksgiving. This one has been a lot of fun and takes us down a road less traveled. It actually gets a little bit heavy at times. And it is swampy (you can hear a very short preview of the main riff here: starts at 3:40-ish). We have a few odds and ends that aren't set in stone in the arrangement but we've opted (as is getting to be our routine) to wait and see what happens during the recording sessions. Sometimes it is just better to play off the cuff and see what happens. I also have a few falsetto parts that are a real blast to sing. I sing a lot more these days...in the car, at home, etc., so hopefully I am getting the hang of it. La la la la la la....

2) Speaking of falsettos, I've been recording the vocals for 'Marigolds' over the last couple of weeks. I sing a little bit, walk away for a while, come back, listen, try it again, etc.. But I'm not fighting the mic as much with this song as I did on 'Sycamore' and 'Some Other Year'. I've stumbled upon a fairly decent mic set-up that seems to be making things easier for me to sing. Same mic, different signal path. Live and learn. Now I just need to get used to hearing my recorded 'higher voice' without nitpicking it to death. (And yes the vocal parts in 'Marigolds' are higher than our last two songs.) I went through the same insecurities when I started 'Sycamore' (in regards to my voice in general), and so I'm glad that I am being stretched into being a better performer. It just takes time to improve....

3) On a personal note, I've been tinkering with various circuit designs with one of my spare guitars in an effort to figure out what capacitors to use in my upcoming Vibrance Guitar (yes I said 'circuit designs' and 'capacitors'...am I a geek or what?) That being said, I somehow managed to hit 'sonic nirvana' with my spare guitar (after four or five trips to the local Radio Shack), so now I just need to finish buying the parts I need for the Vibrance (albeit not from Radio Shack....the real deal needs to have high-end parts in it) and tweak things ever so slightly. But the Vibrance is well under way and Craig Collins (the owner/luthier of Vibrance Guitars) offered to build mine out of some seriously resonant walnut wood that has been drying naturally for over 20 years. I'm pretty sure this guitar will play itself once he gets it finished. I seriously can't wait....

So that's all for now. Be sure to keep checking back every few days for more updates and FP-related news...

And now it's time for me to call it a day and cuddle up next to Julia....
