FP Update: 10.01.2015

Howdy Howdy...

Here's the latest:

1) 'Antebellum': We now have a full band rough demo of our song 'Antebellum' recorded. We've struggled with this one for quite a while as we had to work around certain specific melodic phrases, riffs, etc that were integral to the song. Sometimes when writing songs we'll start with a bunch of random riffs or bits that just happen naturally as we play off of each other's ideas at band practice. From there we'll often change/mutate things as needed to make everything flow better and to make room for everyone's ideas. But with 'Antebellum' we realized that some elements of the song shouldn't be changed or modified from their original forms and so we somewhat tied our own hands and made ourselves revolve around certain parts accordingly. Tricky business. We did try a few times to modify our original 'keeper ideas' but to no avail. In the end it meant we just had to do a lot of 'trial and error' until things seemed 'right' as a whole. In other words we had to work for this one a bit more than usual. And that ate up a lot of time along the way. No biggie though. Glad we figured it out and that everything is cohesive and awesome. Some details won't need to be finalized until we go in and start tracking our parts for real, but for now we have a good map in front of us. Next Step: Record a better 'pre-production' version of everything to see if there are any more gremlins to deal with before we commit to actual recording sessions. Feels good to have the gist of the entire song figured out and moving forward...

2) 'Five Stitches': We are moving along quite nicely on this one as well. It's going to be a fun narrative sort of thing, quirky and eclectic, and a real head scratcher for any music theory armchair refs out there. You know you have great ideas happening whenever you are combining certain notes and phrasing combinations that should be incompatible from a music theory point of view and yet they sound very 'right' in context of the song. Some things can be dissonant and yet completely listenable at the same time which in a way is major accomplishment from a songwriting standpoint. Last night at our practice we even tried realigning certain notes/parts to be 'more compatible' key-wise but ended up likely the original weird mismatches so much more. The instrumentation interplay is going to be incredible on this one...

3) And speaking of stitches, Matt injured one of his thumbs quite badly helping his wife cut some cardboard and styrofoam for one of her cake projects. He filleted the tip of his thumb wide open to the point of exposing bone (the bone itself is what prevented the blade from going any further). Stitches may or may not have been advisable, but Matt opted to tough it out and just keep it clean and wrapped up real good. So Matt is currently on the FP Injured Reserve list until he can bend/move his thumb and hold drumsticks again. At least he didn't lose his entire thumb in the process (although having a nine-fingered drummer would surely make for memorable band trivia)...  :-)

So that's all for now. Plodding forward and writing songs. Stay tuned...
